Eco-Friendly Grocery Bags

Plastic grocery bags are everywhere and I admit, there are some pretty good use for them other than carrying my groceries home. I started to pay attention as I drive around and see them hanging from trees, lining the freeway and reading about how they litter our world. Living in California, there has been news about banning plastic grocery bags altogether by 2012.

The California Assembly has passed legislation prohibiting pharmacies and grocery, liquor and convenience stores from giving out plastic bags. The bill also calls for customers to be charged for using store-issued paper bags. Ouch!

The bill, AB 1998, still needs state Senate approval, but it made me think about how I can do my part and be more eco-friendly. A little can go a long way and small steps add up, so I have gone the proactive route of buying my own reuseable eco-friendly grocery bags and not get stuck by surprise with a plastic bag charge. If the bill passes, it will charge people for use of these plastic bags in hopes of reducing the use. In my case, I choose to use these bags instead of having the law choose for me, and I feel good about doing my part.

There are many bags to choose from and the styles are quite cool. My next purchase will be one with a zipper and will put this on my list to give out for gifts this year. If you are interested, take a look at some below:

Wow Containers

The other night, I saw an infomercial on the Wow Containers and thought to myself...wow what a great idea. I didn't pick up the phone to call to place an order but as the week rolled by, I noticed my frustrations with my own collection of containers.

I couldn't find the proper lids, I couldn't find the proper size and I remembered the wow container as being a great alternative. In frustration, I threw out all of my old plastic containers and placed an order for my wow containers.

Not only does it save me space in my designated container drawer, but it also helps when I can find the proper lid and size for the items I am trying to store. I recommend this useful kitchen gadget for anyone that has the same frustrations that I have had. Now this is a classic kitchen gadget that has withstood the test of time and we possibly be with you during the rest of your time here on earth. So what is this classic kitchen gadget? The Squeezo Strainer is a kitchen gadget that is designed to give you the most juice and puree with the least amount of elbow grease and effort.

You can enjoy a healthy and delicious drink with the squeezo strainer by making juices, jam, baby food, jelly and you can even can the puree to be frozen for later use. One of the best benefits that I love is that you do not need to peel off many of the skins, you simply place in your tomatoes, berries, steamed apples or vegetables in the 2 ½ quart hopper, push the fruit or vegetables into the Squeezo with the wooden plunger, and turn the handle.
