Green Kitchen: Energy Saving Tips

4362039_blogConserving energy can also benefit you by saving time and money.  Here is a list of energy saving tips for you to use in your kitchen.

1)  Use Lids:  When boiling water or cooking, place a lid on pots to prevent heat from escaping.  Not only will you save time but money as well.

2)  Stop peeking into the oven while cooking!  Every time you open the oven door to take a peek, you release quite a bit of heat and it actually takes longer for things to cook.  On average, you release about 20-50 degrees F each time you peek.

3)  Maximize your freezer space:  A full freezer takes up less energy, so do your part and fill it up and use it versus only keeping one or two items in there.

4)  Use the right pot sizes when cooking.  If you are only making soup for yourself, select wisely and select a pot sized accordingly.  Using too big of a pot will result in more energy being wasted, as well as time and money.

5)  Unplug your electronic kitchen gadgets when not in use and make it a habit to turn off the light when you are not in the kitchen.  Don't worry, your kitchen gadgets are not afraid of the dark.

Nice tips. I’d like to add to number 4 that you should also pick the right pot size for the hotplate you’ll be using. If it’s too big, your food won’t be heated properly, and if it’s too small a lot of heat will be wasted (and you might burn your fingers on hot handles etc).

Also, I wrote a post on my blog recently that can be seen as an expansion on point 4: 10 ways to make your refrigerator use less energy.
